There are a lot of misconceptions revolving around the spiritual awakening. Most likely because of two things.
1) You cannot understand what it fully entails until you have walked down the spiritual path yourself.
2) The spiritual journey is incredibly different for each of us, resulting in a lot of different opinions. That being said, the spiritual path can look like many things and there is no one set of rules or guidelines.
However, some experiences can be considered common symptoms of a spiritual awakening. Let’s explore 5 signs that could mean you are on your own spiritual journey.
1. You are becoming aware of your ego
Ego; a personal sense of self-esteem and/or self-importance. Many individuals live an entire lifetime without ever confronting their ego. Becoming aware of this part of you is not pleasant, just as much of the spiritual awakening is unpleasant. However, getting to know your ego can teach you a lot along the way. When you begin to gain awareness around this part of yourself, you will quickly realise how much of your ego speaks for you in day to day life. Although this is a part of you, your depths go far beyond the ego. Your ego does not even scratch the surface of who you truly are. This is one of the first most common signs of a spiritual awakening. Becoming aware of your ego, studying/analyzing it, and learning how to make decisions without consulting your ego first, decreasing its voice. Awareness is the first step.
2. You are learning about your authentic self - becoming more lucid
This section can be correlated to the first point since a large part of learning about your authentic self is addressing your ego and minimizing its voice. Learning about your true self is such a long and beautiful journey. There are so many unknown crevasses of your soul just waiting to be discovered! You can speed up this process to self-discovery by so many different methods. This can be done via journaling, making art, doing psychedelics, learning and trying new things you have never really considered beforehand. One of my favourite ways to get to know myself is by listening to others. Not talking about myself, but listening to what others have to say. Yes, you can learn a lot about yourself by looking within, however, you can learn just as much by looking outward. After settling into your true self more and more, you will likely feel more lucid, more present, and more alive! There is nothing more liberating than growing a healthy relationship with yourself and realising how amazing you truly are!
3. You are seeing signs in everything; synchronicities surround you
This third point is a lot more common than you may think and may come off as ‘far out’ to many individuals. Noticing an alarming amount of synchronicities following you throughout the day could possibly be the universe letting you know you are on the right path. This can be in the form of physical and metaphysical signs. For example, you may notice you are seeing the numbers ‘333’ everywhere… Literally, everywhere! You see it x amount of times every single day and you just don’t know why, but you cannot help but notice. Experiencing daily synchronicities during the spiritual path can mean many things. This is a great sign to know you are on track and to keep doing what you are doing. The universe reaches out to us in many ways, we just have to keep an eye/ear out for these helpful signs.
4. You crave to feel, read, and learn more about the world
The craving to learn more is a healthy craving to have! When you begin to fill all of your downtimes with reading and learning to gain deeper insights into the world, the cosmos, and ourselves. When you begin to awaken spiritually, you will realise that knowledge is everything and there is so, so much more to learn than you once thought. When you learn about the world, you can form unique perspectives and you can make better sense of this crazy existence we call the human experience. This, in return, will help you make sense of yourself as well. Feeling deeply about something won’t seem as scary or complicated because you will be able to harness the meaning behind these thoughts and emotions with more accuracy. The more you learn, the more you feel.
5. You are learning to trust your gut and general intuition
Trusting your intuition is something that takes a lot of practice. During the spiritual awakening, you will notice that it becomes easier to tune into your inner truth. This can be a spiritual thing, however, it also has a lot to do with being in touch with your mind, body, and soul. When something does or doesn’t feel right and your inner voice knows this, you may be notified via a bodily sensation instead of a thought. Trusting your gut instinct will help you a lot in life, and wandering down the spiritual path will assist you in this area. You will notice that by becoming more lucid in the moment, you will catch onto things more easily. This is something that will come more effortlessly with time and you will learn how to master your intuitive nature. Trust yourself, your inner knowledge, and your senses instead of constantly looking for guidance from external sources. You know more than you think you know.
As a closing thought, something that is very important to mention about the spiritual journey is that it is not all sunshine and rainbows. A lot of healing will occur as you unravel the layers of yourself as a whole, and healing is often extremely painful. Don’t rely on social media for accurate representations of spirituality. Remember that at the end of the day, social media is fake! It is not realistic and can portray extremely misleading ideas around things like spirituality. Read books, speak to other like-minded people in the community, have a psychedelic experience– Just don’t look to social media for guidance on your spiritual path as what you are seeking out will likely be unauthentic, even if it is very convincing!
You will experience extreme ups and downs, deep confusion, and will have to put in a lot of work along the way. Just keep your eyes on the bigger picture and never give up. The Earth needs spiritually charged individuals like you. When we can transform ourselves, it changes the world around us as well. Help yourself first, so you can help others. After all, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Do the inner work so you can plant a seed in someone else.
