With the increase in microdosers across the globe, there is a lot of talk circulating the topic. Being a relatively new practice, a lot of questions are surfacing as more people seem to be growing curiosity… Considering the lack of funding for psychedelic studies, the short-lived history of microdosing, and all of the mixed opinions floating around, all we have at this point in time is anecdotal information. Many of us can agree that one day microdosing may very well be the norm. For now, we microdosers need to have an open mind and steer away from a biased approach.
Being the unique creatures we are with specific needs, each microdosing path seems to be different. This is one of the very interesting factors of this practice. It seems as though everyone reaps similar benefits of microdosing but through different experiences. Humans are equally as sensitive to our environment as we are to what we put into our bodies. That being said, it is important to optimize our lifestyle and the things we introduce in our lives, such as microdosing. This is why I would like to say beforehand that these are my microdosing tips that have personally helped me optimize my own dosing path and has allowed me to understand how microdosing works a lot more and how it can work best in my favour.
What is Microdosing?
Before we get into my microdosing tips, let’s answer the most basic question, ‘what is microdosing?’. Essentially, it is the act of ingesting a micro-amount of a psychedelic substance with the motive of reaping the benefits of microdosing. This may sound daunting, however, these micro-amounts of psychedelics are so small you will not experience any psychoactive effects, meaning you will not get high. Microdosing mushrooms (psilocybin) is the most common compound used for this practice, however, some individuals also use lysergamides such as LSD.
Timing is everything! Firstly, before getting into tips for finding a good schedule, it is important for me to explain what time of the day you should be taking your dose and why. If you are taking a microdose of a lysergamide then it will typically last between 8-10 hours. Microdosing mushrooms will typically last between 5-8 hours. This is because the effects of psilocybin don’t last as long as lysergamides usually do. Although the effects are subtle and the dosage isn’t psychoactive, you will still likely feel slightly stimulated. This could potentially disrupt your circadian rhythm from functioning properly. Because of this, it is important to take your microdose in the morning, preferably alongside nourishing food. This is especially important for those who either suffer from sleeping disorders or simply have a hard time winding down and falling asleep.
2. Finding the perfect dosing schedule
Humans do build a tolerance to some psychedelics pretty fast, which is why you need to have space between your ‘dose days’. It is always suggested that you have at least 2 days between each dose day to make sure you are getting the ‘full effect’ from your doses. Before you determine what days you will microdose and which days you have off, it is important to pinpoint your motive. For example, if you simply want to increase your overall focus and performance, then sticking to a strict microdosing schedule may be your best bet. The most commonly used schedule for this type of motive is 1 day on and 2 days off. Although, there are other instances where some microdosers may not need to have a strict schedule. For example, you may want to increase your creativity with microdosing and therefore only take a dose on the day each week that you focus on a creative project.
It is important to be open to changing your schedule until you find what works best for you. Personally, my dosing schedule is ever-changing. I first started microdosing roughly 4 years ago because I was suffering from severe depression. At this time I was using a lysergamide. I microdosed on a 1 day on, 2 days off schedule for over a year. Mixed with taking better care of myself and using microdosing as a tool, both changes helped me get out of my (what I thought was) hopeless depression. I stopped microdosing because at that point in time I didn’t find it necessary anymore. As time went on, I began steering my career in a more creative direction. This is when I decided to start microdosing again, however, this time I’m not following any schedule and just take a dose here and there when I feel like I could use the extra help with my creative projects. Although I still use a lysergamide microdosing product from time to time, I now primarily use magic truffles for microdosing instead.
Really experiment and try lots of different schedules until you find the right one. As you walk down your microdosing path, you may find the need for a change in your schedule. Just do what is best for you!
3. Keep a journal and have an experimental approach
One thing I have been doing since the beginning of my microdosing adventure is keeping a separate journal where I log my dose day thoughts, feelings, what I ate/drank that day, etc. In the beginning, I thought it wasn’t going to be as helpful as it was, but I was definitely wrong. About 2 weeks after I had been logging everything I noticed a pattern that helped me significantly improve my journey right off the bat. At first, I was microdosing with a lysergamide and I was taking 10 mcg on dose days. Some days I felt great and other days I felt a bit over-stimulated. I didn’t know why some days were so different from others and wasn’t sure if microdosing was for me. I decided to look in my journal and noticed immediately that the days I felt over-stimulated were the days I drank coffee. I wasn’t a huge coffee drinker but did enjoy having a cup every few days. It turned out that my microdose didn’t sit well with me when I also had coffee in my system. I made the change and only drank coffee on off days and immediately noticed my over-stimulation issue had disappeared. I nearly stopped microdosing a few weeks into my journey because I didn’t know why I was having this issue. This is one good example of how journaling can help optimize your experience. Logging your microdosing path is a great way to stay in tune with your mind, body, and soul.
4. Self educate
This tip is pretty self-explanatory. Learn as much as you can about whichever psychedelic you are microdosing with. Eg, if you use psilocybin, then try spending a bit of time every once in a while learning more about the compound! Learning about the product you are using is a great way to get a rounded understanding of your psychedelic and how it interacts with the human body. Although there are not loads of studies on microdosing, little ones do pop up every now and again, so make sure you keep an eye out for those and seek them out as well! Follow microdosing accounts on Instagram because they often will have helpful information available. Not to mention it is a great way to get more hands-on in the community! Ask lots of questions on different platforms, forums, and stimulate conversation about microdosing where it’s appropriate.
5. Finding the right microdosing company to work with
If you are lucky enough to live in Europe, North America, or other countries that allow microdosing companies to operate legally, then it is very important to go with a company that you like. It shouldn’t take too much to pinpoint which companies have the motive of helping their clients and which are more focused on simply making a sale… If you are microdosing a lysergamide, then ask the company about the chemical they are using. If you are going for a more ‘natural’ experience with magic truffles then ask where they source their truffles from. A good company should be happy to help you with any questions and be glad you are asking questions rather than blindly practicing microdosing in an unmindful matter. Companies with good intentions will have your best interest in mind and will be more concerned with making sure you have all the information you need before starting rather than trying to push you for a sale. Seek out the authentic businesses that are truly here for the microdosing movement!
6. Enjoy the ride
The most important tip of all, enjoy the ride! This is an extremely exciting time to be alive in regards to the psychedelic community. There are so many different trippy compounds with so many different uses and applications. Everyone has their preferences… Some people like to trip out on high doses of hallucinogenics while others prefer to microdose-some like to do both! The nice thing about microdosing is that it is a great way for psychedelics to put their foot in the door and make society take the topic a bit more seriously. Humans have been using psychedelics for many centuries and we have benefited greatly from them. How amazing is it to be a microdoser at the very beginning of what is likely going to make history in the grand scheme of psychedelics? Be excited about your place in this community and enjoy the ride! The list for benefits of microdosing is already long, and hopefully, we will be able to understand more about this practice as time goes on which will make it easier for us to optimize our application process.
We need open-minded people like you to help kick-start the microdosing movement. The more people microdose, the more studies that are conducted, the more normalized psychedelics as a whole will become. Thank you for educating yourself a little bit more. I hope that these tips were helpful to you and that you can use this article as a way to improve your microdosing experience!
Thank you, happy microdosing!
